 Dear Jeff,
I read the abstract in Chinese about the VL case reported in Hebei, China (near Beijing). The patient is a 9 years old girl. She traveled with her family to the VL-endemic site in the northwestern provice of Gansu. It is thought to be an imported case, since VL has been eliminated in Beijing area in 1958, as stated in that article. Whether sylvatic cycle of CVL still exists in the suburb hilly area is unknown.
Happy holidays !

Case of Leishmaniasis Found in Baoding City, Hebei Province
-----------------------------------------------------------
Baoding Municipal No. 1 Hospital recently confirmed a rare case of
leishmaniasis [which has been] eradicated from Baoding for 50 years.

The patient is a 9-year-old girl from Qingyuan County [Hebei
Province]. After birth she moved with her parents to Gansu's Dangchang
County. On [8 Nov 2014], she entered No. 1 Hospital due to high fever.
Experts at Peking Union Hospital confirmed the diagnosis of visceral
leishmaniasis.

[Baoding City is located approximately 150 kilometers [approx. 93
miles] southwest of Beijing in Hebei Province. The climatic conditions
do not support transmission of leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis has been
reported from Gansu Province, with an estimated annual incidence of
3.8 cases per 100 000 population (Zhang S et al. Incidence of Japanese
encephalitis, visceral leishmaniasis and malaria before and after the
Wenchuan earthquake, in China. Acta Trop. 2013;128:85-9). This could
be the place where the patient was infected. - Mod.EP]
