[Leish-l] RE : L.donovani in dogs?

Dear all

Through molecular methods, including the sequence of genes coding for isoenzymes, VL isolates from Sudan have all been L. donovani, including those from dogs (unpublished). However, some zymodemes do have some gene sequences that are typically L. infantum sequences (notably ASAT/GOT) – see Mauricio et al 2006 for example . The most likely explanation being that they are recombinant forms between the two “species” of the L. donovani complex.

In Mauricio et al (2007) two strains from dogs were also included, one from Iraq (Sukkar2) (also see Mauricio et al., 2006) and another from Italy, which clustered with L. donovani.

In Mauricio et al (2004 and 2001) there was also included a canine strain from Kenya, which showed L. donovani profiles.

These strains are not only from different countries, but also different genetic groups within L. donovani.

I suspect that L. donovani is more widespread in dogs than it is recognized in the literature.

All the best

Isabel

Dear all,

We have published a PCR-positive dog case in Mymensingh district in Bangladesh (see the attached pdf file).

In additional investigations, we also found rk39-positive dogs and PCR-positive dogs in the same area (paper in preparation).

Ken

Dear Jeff,

I know that Nouzha Guessous in Morocco isolated strains of L. Donovani from

dogs .

Steve Reed says:

"I am in Bangladesh…they think they have L donovani in dogs here

Is that the case in China? Or elsewhere?"

Does anybody know of a bone fide ID of donovani in dogs?

Jeff
