Some of you will know that a well known leishmaniac, Prof. Dick Ashford, has been seriuosly ill. He is well known to the older leishmaniacs for cracking
the descriptive epidemiology of CL in Ethiopia and for the part he played in the early days of the WHO Special Programme on the Leishmaniases. He was an active member of the Scientific Committee and, later, was the Chairman of the Steering Committee for several years. Just before Christmas, Dick collapsed
with a brain abscess. He was in intensive care for a time after an operation to drain the abcses. The first antibiotic treatment did not cure him and he
relapsed with loss of power in his arm and left leg. Another operation and a change of treatment has cured the infection and he is now slowly getting back the use of his arm and leg with intensive physiotherapy. On 7 February, Dick will be moved into rehabilitation - a good sign. The prognosis is looking brighter with each day that passes. If any leishmaniac who knows Dick has a moment to spare, why not send Dick a 'Get Well' message to kayashford at hotmail.com? It would do wonders for his morale.
