FIRST SYMPOSIUM ON NEW WORLD TRYPANOSOMES
Trypanosoma vivax, T. evansi, T. cruzi and T.equiperdum
              (20-22nd November 1996 - Georgetown - GUYANA)
     ------------------------------------------------------------------

GENERAL INTRODUCTION (Sandra Vokaty) at the beginning of day 1

                          DAY 1: EPIDEMIOLOGY

National Epidemiological datas to be exposed by the participants (in all
cases, even if poorly available)
There will have as many papers as different national (or geographical)
participants.
Once people exposing their own data will be identified, the countries or
areas for which no paper is proposed should be briefly exposed by one of
us.
Emphazise on seasonality, vector transmission and economical impact is
expected.
Synthesis on the epidemiological situations of animal trypanosomiasis in
the New World could be draw at the end of the day.

                           DAY 2: DIAGNOSIS.

1) Parasitological diagnosis techniques
2) Antigen detection tests
3) Antibody detection tests
4) DNA detection tests

Papers should briefly present the techniques, to emphazise on:
        - technical interest and limits
        - cost
        - sensitivity and specificity (genus and species specificity must
          be clearly differenciated)
        - parasite species and host species for which they are adapted.

DAY 3: CONTROL / ROUND TABLE.

1) Parasite control:
Problems on resistance, techniques of investigation in vitro/in vivo.
Problems of multiple species treatments (T. vivax and T. evansi).

2) Vector control:
   Chemical treatments
   Zootechnic management

3) Host parameters:
   Immunity status of the hosts
Distinction between highly enzootic and non enzootic area.

4) The question of erradication.

5) ROUND TABLE.

GENERAL CONCLUSIONS (Sandra Vokaty) at the end of day 3
