We have a project on the epidemiology of canine leishmaniasis based
in Belem at the mouth of the Amazon, and working largely on nearby
Marajo Island. This is a cohort study investigating infection rates
in the dog population, immunology, clinical outcome, infectiousness,
and putting all this together in a quantitative epidemiological
framework which is being used to assess the efficacy of various
control methods. During the 5 or so years we have been working with
the Instituto Evandro Chagas in Belem we have had visiting medical and
veterinary students and would, in principle, be happy to have
another. The catch is that we are plannig toi finish fieldwork early
next summer, though it is a little early to be precise about the
date. So the timing may or may not be suitable. But please get in
touch if you want to discuss it further.
