Douglas Barker introduced me and scores of other students to the then new molecular techniques that he pioneered introducing into Leihmania diagnostics. I had the pleasure of working with him in his lab as a Wellcome research fellow at the department of Pathology University of Cambridge. Like many of his generation he was in many ways an exceptional figure, whoever rupped shoulders with him experienced human warmth generosity and integrity at their best.
Upon returning to Sudan which coincided with his retirment approaching he donated and covered the cost of shipment of many key equipments to the labortaory then named after him, while also covering the subscription of the journal of cell biology for years to come. My deepest condolonces to his wife Valerie and family to his colleagues and students allover the leishmaniaisis community.

>This is extremely sad. Douglas Barker was pioneer in the molecular biology of Leishmania and brought a lot in the field. His passionate temper and strong character, together with his friendship, his generosity and good humour, have remained in my memories for decades. He was certainly one of the most endearing researchers in our field.
