Thank you very much for your email.

I am the scientific responsible of a colony of Phlebotomus perniciosus (Diptera, Psychodidae) at IHMT-UNL that presents the following characteristics:

1. Institucional address - Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT), Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (UNL), Rua da Junqueira Nº 100 | 1349-008 Lisboa, Portugal.

2. Current contact information of responsible scientist (phone, fax, mailing address, email address) - Odete Afonso (Afonso MO, MD, PhD), Unidade de Parasitologia Médica, Global Health and Tropical Medicine, Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical,  Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Rua da Junqueira Nº 100, 1349-008 Lisboa, Portugal;

3. Species/strains of sand flies in colony - Phlebotomus perniciosus (Diptera, Psychodidae).

4. Site of origin (locality and country) - The specimens (pupae) were originated from Spain and supplied by the eminent Scientist Professor Dr. Robert Killick-Kendrick. To date, this is the first successful colonization of sand flies for consecutive generations in Portugal.

5. Approximate number of generations in colony (or number of years) - Our colony was established in mid-1990´s, by Researcher and phlebotomine sand fly specialist Carlos Alves-Pires (number of years: 1994-2014).

6. Larval diet - Composted mixture of equal parts of ground rabbit faeces and rabbit pellets.

7. Adult diet (blood -meal sources) - Sand fly females are allowed to fed on hamster anaesthetised.

8. Rearing conditions including temperature, relative humidity and light:dark cycle - Ambient conditions - temperature: 25-27ºC, relative humidity: 70-80%, photoperiod (hours): 16 Light / 8 Dark.

9. Research interests and pertinent publications - Applications: Insecticide-repellent bioassay tests; Experimental infections; Molecular studies; Laboratorial classes; Students training; Sending of specimens to national and international Teaching and Research Institutions.

Assunto: [Leish-l] Global Sand Fly Colony Database

Dear Colleagues,

Once again I am updating the Global Sand Fly Colony Database and having the website reformatted to make it a more accessible and useful resource for sand fly workers. Your assistance is requested.

If you maintain phlebotomine sand fly colonies, it would be very much appreciated if you could provide the following information for the database:

1. Institutional address

2. Current contact information of responsible scientists (phone, fax, mailing address, email address)

3. Species/strains of sand flies in colony.

4. Site of origin (locality and country)

5. Approximate number of generations in colony (or number of years)

6. Larval diet

7. Adult diet (blood-meal sources)

8. Rearing conditions including temperature, relative humidity and light:dark cycle

9. Research interests and pertinent publications

If you know of other laboratories that maintain sand fly colonies in your country or region, please forward this request or send the pertinent contact information to me.

I hope to have this database updated and reformatted by early 2015 so that it can be available and easily accessible online.

With sincere thanks,

Phillip G. Lawyer, Ph.D.
