Dear All,
To continue the discussion of animal reservoirs in the Indian subcontinent, it is not known so far the existence of any animal reservoirs in this region. However, several attempts were  already done to understand the role of animals in disease epidemiology. A snapshot study was conducted under the framework of KALANET project in Nepal (the first known study in Nepal) where large number of domestic animals (goats) were found to have Leishmania DNA (by PCR) and antibody (by  DAT). These findings were already published in Parasitology and Emerging infectious Diseases but it was not looked in dogs as most of the dogs were street dogs in our study set up which donot indeed exclude their possibility as reservoirs. I think that more studies are definitely required in the whole region to understand the role of animals to ahceive the goal of running elimination programme. This should be further topics for comprehensive research as well.

Dear all,

We have published a PCR-positive dog case in Mymensingh district in
Bangladesh (see the attached pdf file).
In additional investigations, we also found rk39-positive dogs and
PCR-positive
dogs in the same area (paper in preparation).

Steve Reed  says:
"I am in Bangladesh…they think they have L donovani in dogs here

Is that the case in China? Or elsewhere?"

Does anybody know of a bone fide ID of donovani in dogs?

Jeff
