[Leish-l] Leish-l Digest, Vol 52, Issue 10

For many years, our kind colleagues at Hadassah Medical School sent out an informal news letter: "The Leishmaniac."
The "Leishmaniac" was well read and greatly enjoyed by the leish community.
The historic Leishmaniac newsletter served the leish scientific community then, in similar manner as the leish network does now.

The leish network provides a critical communication forum to allow free discourse in preliminary discussion, a "sounding board," assessable to a broad sector of the global leish community..
Often in one's career, it is helpful to share ideas, health issues, breaking news with one's colleagues to gain prompt feedback.
Global feedback is a powerful tool available to our leish community.
Such informal discussions have always held an important place in science together with more formal peer-reviewed publications.

The leish network, now accessible to most, encourages participation of a broad leish community uniting us in our research with colleagues.
It allows us as leish-scientists to toss our "socccer ball ideas," let the global leish team kick the ideas around, and, using team feedback, reach our collective research goal for excellence.

Bravo to Professor Shaw for his hard work to establish and maintain this network forum!

I urge Dr. Shaw to continue his effort with the activities of the network
communication as before. Anything provided as attachment by the sender along
with the message will be his or her responsibility. A disclaimer is needed to
indicate this and also to indicate screening of messages at the discretion of
the webmaster. My suggestion about screening is not to pass any scientific
judgments, but to screen out junk mails or unrelated/non-scientific topics.

KP raised a very important point in his reply to Isra?s comment on the Madrid VL
outbreak by saying that:

" It is understood that such informal communications do not constitute a formal
scientific publication, but do help spread the information more quickly to the
scientific community."

For the reasons given by KP Leish-L communications are not eligible as citations
in formal publications. The idea behind the messages is simply to make people
aware of recent breakthroughs and advances and to encourage informal informal
discussions on any subject remotely related to leishmaniasis.

This brings me to question the acceptability of web-links as sources of
information in dissertations, theses and papers.

With best wishes

Jeffrey

Dear All;
I mean
to send this comments to all in Leish list but I was forward only to Dr. Davis .
So
Im sending again:.

There is no native rabbit in the New World.
Although there are several species of hares in Americas (at least 16) its
possible that most is extinct or is
in danger of extinction. Sylvilagus brasiliensis (known as tapiti in
Brazil(Tupi-Guarany language)) occurs from Mexico to Argentina and is the
commom hare in Brazil. There are few
studies with this species and probably none related Leishmania infection.

European hare (Lepus europaeus), introduced from Europe become a
pest in some areas of Argentina and south Brazil and with this we have also no
idea
of the epidemiological importance. With this new epidemiological situation in
Spain,
studies with nativehares and even introduced hares are
necessary.

Best wishes,

Madrid.
