Dorcas Costa brought more light to the clear the problem. She has to write
her PhD thesis in the new Portuguese language and came out with this
suggestion that put more countries in the argument: according to the new
deal between Portuguese speaking countries, a composed word is written
separatedly if the two words preserve their previous meanings and
relationship. If they gain another meaning when put together, they are
written together.

The assumption may be universal and common to many languages...Therefore it
is an etymologist that could eventually bring the solution and
this probably is the ultimate reason for the rule sustained by taxonomists,
as indicated by S. Beverley and B. Killick-Kendrick.

In this way,sand fly would be really the best option and the war would be
not among countries but among sand and fly.
