Giemsa stain is the stain of choice for most Leishmaniacs, either for
tissue amastigotes or promastigotes. Why is it that Giemsa is not written
Giemsa's after the inventor of the stain Gustav Giemsa (1867-1948)? Shute
and Maryon, in their wonderful book "Laboratory technique for the study of
malaria" , write Field's stain, Maurer's dots, Ross's black spores, but
both Giemsa and Leishman are without the 's. Even George Gurr refers to
Gurr's improved Giemsa stain in his monograph "Biological Staining
Methods". So has anyone any thoughts why this stain is not properly
accredited to its inventor.
