I have a dog with Leishmaniasis. He was imported from Italy, diagnosed with
Leish about a year and a half later. He's been on Allopurinol since then -
and it's now 5 years later and he's still symptom free and still on the
Allopurinol. He was diagnosed and treated at Michigan State University.
Originally I was told that a specific species of sand fly was necessary to
transmit the disease. Recently, I've heard that it can be spread directly
through blood or saliva transmission. I don't know if that is true or not.
I'd be happy to tell you anything about my experience with this disease.
