Rondani and Berte are credited with creating the genus Phlebotomus (Rondani
C. 1840 Sopra una specie di insetto dittero. Memoria prima para servire alla
Ditterologia Italiana [no. 1] 16pp Parma) cited in Lewis, D.J. (1982). A taxonomic
review of the genus Phlebotomus (Diptera: Psychodidae). Bulletin of the British
Museum of Natural History (Entomology) 45, 121-209.

The first description of a Phlebotomus species may have been that of Philippo
Bonnani in 1691 which is reproduced with a translation into English and the
original drawings in Bettini, S., Omodeo, P. and Maroli, M. (1991). Philippo
Bonanni and his "Micrographia Curiosa". Parassitologia 33 (Suppl. 1), 5-16.
Bonnani called the insect Culex minimus to distinguish it from mosquitoes
which he named Culex.

Sir William Boog Leishman's dates are 1865-1926 (The Wellcome Trust Illustrated
History of Tropical Diseases. FEG Cox ed. 1996 London). Leishman also has an
entry in the British National Biography.
