The Leishmaniasis Gap Analysis Report and Action Plan carried out in
Albania, Jordan, and Pakistan during 2015 shows that despite its
worldwide prevalence and disastrous impact on the lives of millions,
leishmaniasis is still very much a growing, neglected disease, mainly
affecting impoverished communities, living in poor conditions, without
adequate access to shelter, healthcare, and medication.

The full report can be found at
.<http://www.cordsnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/FINAL-Leishmaniasis-Gap-Analysis-Report-and-Action-Plan_30-January-2016.pdf>

The analysis was carried out by regional disease surveillance networks
SECID/SEEHN [Southeast European Center for Surveillance and Control of
Infectious Diseases/Southeastern Europe Health Network], MECIDS
[Middle East Consortium on Infectious Disease Surveillance], and Pak
One Health supported by CORDS [Connecting Organizations for Regional
Disease Surveillance] Network and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation.
[ProMED thanks James Crilly for alerting us to the CORDS Network
report.

It is well known that Pakistan is endemic for leishmaniasis, and
ProMED has also posted regularly on the increase in the number of
cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in refugees from Syria.

Leishmaniasis is endemic in Southern Europe including Spain, France,
Italy, The Balkans, Greece, and Turkey, and the report does not
provide new data.

Detailed background information on leishmaniasis in Albania, Jordan,
Pakistan can be found in
Alvar J et al and the WHO Leishmaniasis Control Team: Leishmaniasis
worldwide and global estimates of its incidence. PLoS One. 2012; 7(5):

Leishmaniasis is a poverty related disease and one of the countries
with the highest incidence is Afghanistan; a considerable number of
refugees from Afghanistan entering Pakistan has cutaneous
leishmaniasis. - Mod.EP
