font-family:Verdana'> The Brazilian scientific community,
especially medical entomology and parasitology, yesterday lost one of its most
illustrious research workers, Dr Italo de Araujo Sherlock. Italo was <st1:personname productid="one of the" u2:st="on">one
of the</st1:personname> country's most brilliant medical entomologists, and his
papers on sand flies and triatomines, including descriptions of new species,
brought him international fame and recognition.<u1:p></u1:p></span></font><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Verdana><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Verdana'> His scientific career began in
his native Sobral, Ceará under the guidance of Maria and Leonidas Deane during
their celebrated studies on visceral leishmaniasis in the North East. From
there he moved to Bahia where he worked with the famous <st1:personname productid="Instituto Oswaldo Cruz" u2:st="on">Instituto
Oswaldo Cruz</st1:personname> entomologist, Otavio Mangabeira Filho, who
founded <st1:personname productid="the Institute of" u2:st="on">the <st1:placetype u2:st="on"><st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Institute</st1:placetype></st1:PlaceType> of</st1:personname> <st1:placename u2:st="on"><st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Rural Endemic Diseases</st1:placename></st1:PlaceName> in <st1:city u2:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">Salvador</st1:city></st1:City>, which in the 1970’s became the <st1:place u2:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Bahia</st1:place></st1:place> branch of Fiocruz, and where Italo
spent the whole of his academic life.<u1:p></u1:p></span></font><o:p></o:p></p>

will deeply miss Italo's enthusiasm that influenced so many young workers, and

especial da Parasitologia médica, perdeu ontem um de seus mais ilustres
pesquisadores, o Dr Italo de Araujo Sherlock. Italo foi um dos mais brilhantes
entomologistas do país, com inúmeros trabalhos sobre triatomíneos e flebotomíneos,
descrevendo várias espécies novas, tornando-o conhecido internacionalmente.
Oriundo de Sobral, Ceará, onde começou sua carreira cientifica nos anos 50 como
estagiário do casal Leonidas e Maria Deane no célebre estudo sobre a ecologia
da leishmaniose visceral no Nordeste, Italo em seguida foi trabalhar na Bahia
com Otavio Mangabeira Filho, famoso entomologista do IOC, que fundou o
Instituto de Endemias Rurais em Salvador, instituto que deu origem nos anos 70
à Fiocruz na Bahia, onde Italo dedicou toda sua vida acadêmica.</span></font><font
size=2 face=Verdana><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Verdana'><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
