This is in fact, true! I recently moved to Saudi Arabia and found that hijab may be a key factor for lesser prevalence of CL in females due to negligible exposed area for sandfly bites.
There have been reports stating that inSaudi Arabia, CL is more prevalent in males than females and also in adults. [ZakaiHA. Journal of Advanced Laboratory Research in Biology 2014].

A recentstudy from Najran region in Southern Saudia Arabia reported males to be moreaffected than females. [Khalil MI. Journal of Biology and Life Science 2017].

According to the Ministry of Health data forthe year 2015, males (78%) were affected more than females (22%). [Abuzaid A.Abuzaid et al. Vector-borne and Zoonotic diseases 2017]

This could be attributed to the customsused by females in Saudi Arabia, which requires the covering of most of thebody in abaya and hijab and hence less exposure to the sand fly bites.Secondly, most of the working force comprises of males, though currently thetrend is changing. So, males are more affected and that also on the exposed body parts.

 Subject: [Leish-l] burqa

Recently, it came up in my mind that the use of burqa might be associated
with the protection against cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Middle-East. I
am pretty sure that I heard from someone or read somewhere but I cannot
recall the source.

Then I asked my Prof. Ali Khamesipour, from Tehran, and to Prof. Jeff Shaw
but they do not know anything about the subject.

Finally, I entered in PubMed and found only the attached article by Al
Aboud et al with a quote that burqa might be protective against
leishmaniasis.

The issue is quite interesting. So, I ask the colleagues who know something
or that want to express their thought about the issue to share with our
community.

Cheers,

Carlos.
