I have an interesting and clear souvenir of Richard. When I was in Bolivia, Richard came to study different populations of Lu. Longipalpis. Together we collected a lot of specimens of Lu. Longipalpis from foci at different levels of altitude (slopes of Andean cordillera and low tropical areas). When back to La Paz ( the lab was at an altitude of 3.500 m), we had a shock , we felt desperate: all sandflies appeared dead , motionless, lying on the floor of the cages. So many efforts for nothing! However , advised by Richard, we heated the room during the night and surprisingly, on the next morning, all sandflies were perfectly alive and he was able to carry them safely up to his lab in Keele!

Thanks Richard for your high human qualities and professional skills. You will be sadly missed!

Philippe
