Dear colleagues,
The situation of Leishmaniasis in Syria is well known since many years now.
In the past decade, the incidence of this disease increased 4 to 5 folds.
The Syrian Ministry of Health declared in 2011 and 2012 an incidence
exceeding 55 000 cases/year. The extreme majority of Leishmaniasis cases in
Syria are due to the cutaneous form (CL). More than 85% of these cases are
due to Leishmania tropica. Syrian Health authorities has established during
the past decades a huge net of health centers around the country to treat
infected people (free of charge) . The WHO, had more than one control
program implemented in the country (especially in Aleppo). The present war
situation has lead to a dramatic decrease to treatment access which
certainly aggravates the problem. In addition, important population
displacement within the country contributed to the appearance of new
outbreaks.
In Lebanon, a neighboring country affected by a massive flow of displaced
Syrians, cutaneous Leishmaniasis outbreak is expected to happen. Control
prevention methods are difficult to apply since the Syrian refugees are not
located in geographically delimited camps. They live among Lebanese people
in several villages and cities.
The video on Leishmaniasis in children from Syria diffused in a previous
email attracts the attention on the dramatic situation aggravated by the
lack of medication. I need to say that the video includes scientific
fundamental mistakes that you have certainly noticed.
Thank You
