Sadly on the 14th April 2012 Brazil lost one of its outstanding medical entomologists, Almério Castro Gomes. Almério was known for his tremendous enthusiasm and was always ready to help and encourage his students and colleagues. He was a staff member of São Paulo University´s prestigious School of Public Health and began his career in its department of Epidemiology under the guidance of Brazil´s eminent medical entomologist Oswaldo Paulo Forattini. His good humour could always be counted on in difficult meetings. In honour of his contributions on the ecology of sand flies Galati and Nunes named a sand fly they had found in Mato Grosso do Sul Lutzomyia almerioi. This species has been found infected with flagellates and is a potential vector of both Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi and a species of the subgenus L.(Viannia) which was probably L.(V.) braziliensis. Above all he represented a generation of entomologists who appreciated the importance of field observations and his untiring input was crucial in improving Brazil´s epidemiological surveillance of vectors associated with leishmaniasis and arboviruses, such as dengue and yellow fever.
