The NVBDCP updated numbers on visceral leishmaniasis, kala azar

[The data clearly show that visceral leishmaniasis is prevalent in at

least 3 states: Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal despite government

attempts to control the infection.



A recent paper by John TJ et al (Continuing challenge of infectious

diseases in India. Lancet. 2011; 377(9761): 252-69; abstract available

at

<http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(10)61265-2/abstract>)

discusses why a series of infectious diseases continues to be a

problem in India and points to the need for changes in the structure

of the public health care system.
