Dear Sundar,
The primary reservoirs of Leishmania peruviana are mammals mainly small rodents, Phillotis andinum, Akodon sp, Didelphis albiventris (Llanos-Cuentas EA., Roncal N., Villaseca P., Paz L., Ogusuku E., Pérez JE., Cáceres A., Davies CR. Natural infections of Leishmania peruviana in animals in the Peruvian Andes. Transactions of the Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 93: 15 – 20, 1999). The dogs are secondary reservoirs and their role is still not well understood (Reithinger R., Canales-Espinoza J., Llanos - Cuentas A., and Davis C. Domestic dog ownership: a risk factor for human infection with Leishmania (Viannia) species. Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 97: 141-145, 2003). The rate of cure of one schedule of Sb5+ is 71% similar to L.braziliensis (69%) and quite different to L.guyanensis (92%) in Peru. The mucosal involvement of L.peruviana is rare and usually by contiguity mechanism, very different to L.brazilinesis.
Best regards
Alejandro
