Hello all,

I'm sending this message to announce the first update of data for the
Leishdb database.

For those of you to whom the subject is new, Leishdb is one of several WHO
funded parasite genome databases. It runs using the software package
Acedb, which is available both for Unix (including Linux for the PC) and
Macintosh machines via anonymous ftp. The software includes a range of
graphical displays for data types such as nucleotide and protein sequence
data, physical mapping data, chromosome maps, Blast sequence comparison
results and hybridisation data.

The Leishdb database currently contains :-

* all nucleotide sequence data forLeishmania (as currently found in
  GenBank/EMBL)
* all protein sequence data for Leishmania (as currently found in
  SwissProt)
* all Medline references for Leishmania from 1983-present
* cosmid fingerprinting data for Leishmania major Friedlin - work done by
  Al Ivens (Imperial College)
* hybridisation data for a variety of probes to the cLHYG cosmid library
of L.major Friedlin - including whole chromosome probings of chrmosomes 1-6
and 13 as done by Al Ivens
* EST markers as mapped to L. major Frieldlin chromosomes
* Blast comparison data for all nucleotide sequences in the database
including the L.major ESTs (both blastn and blastx)

Leishdb is available via anonymous ftp at the following site :-

ftp.ebi.ac.uk

in the directory /pub/databases/parasites/Leish/

In this directory is a file README.Leishdb, which contains details on how
to download and install both Acedb and the Leishdb data and configuration
files. This includes instructions both for setting up the database from
scratch and also for updating an existing copy of Leishdb - the Leishdb
data is available both as a complete set of data files and as a set of
update files containing only data which has been changed or added to
the database since its first release in October.

Finally, a reminder that the WHO Leishmania Genome Network WWW Site may be
accessed at :-

http://www.ebi.ac.uk/parasites/leish.html

and the WHO parasite genome WWW Site (including the parasite genome
Blast server) may be accessed at :-

http://www.ebi.ac.uk/parasites/parasite-genome.html

Please feel free to e-mail me (aslett at ebi.ac.uk) with any queries
regarding Leishdb (either computing matters or things you would like to
see included in future Leishdb releases), Acedb in general or any other
parasite genome matters.

Thanks,

Martin Aslett,
WHO Parasite Genome Database Co-ordinator,
EBI, Hinxton, Cambridge
